This Is Why Some Lessons Fly… and Others Fall Flat

The quickest way to lose a swimmer’s focus? Predictability.

Hi, Mark here. Hope you’ve had a good week in the pool.

Let me ask you something…

Have your lessons started to feel a little predictable?

It happens to all of us. We find a structure that works, a few drills that get results, and before long we’re repeating the same patterns week after week.

But variation is where the magic happens.

When we keep lessons fresh:

  • Pupils stay engaged and curious
  • Confidence builds more naturally
  • Progress accelerates without pressure

Sometimes it’s as simple as:

  • Swapping equipment to spark new drills
  • Turning a technical exercise into a quick game
  • Reordering your usual sequence
  • Introducing a contrasting activity to fine-tune one key skill

Variation doesn’t mean chaos. It means with a fresh focus.

Read my full article on how to keep your lessons fresh and varied, here.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the most effective lessons aren’t complicated - they’re purposeful and varied. We progress, but we don’t push. We challenge, but we support. We repeat - but with subtle twists.

That’s exactly why I created my 101 Swimming Lesson Plans book (instant preview here).

It’s not designed to replace your creativity.
It’s designed to fuel it.

You don’t have to follow it page by page.
You can dip in when you need:

  • A new focus for next week
  • A contrasting activity
  • A fresh way to approach a familiar stroke
  • A different structure for adults or beginners

If you’ve ever wondered how it’s possible to fit 101 lessons into one document, I’d encourage you to open the preview.

It lists every single lesson.

You’ll see how each one builds progressively — across strokes, stages and abilities — while keeping things engaging and varied.

Even if you’re just curious, it’s worth a look.

Keep your lessons fresh.
Keep your swimmers engaged.
And keep developing yourself as a teacher.

That’s how good teachers become outstanding ones.

That's all for this week. Happy teaching!

Cheers

Mark
